Joyce Christie

CHRISTIE, Joyce Eliza – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Joyce Eliza Christie, age 84 of Sherose Island (Barrington) N.S. Mom passed away peacefully January 18, 2018 at the Meadows Home for Special Care with her daughters by her side. Born July 8, 1933 in North East Point, Cape Sable Island, she was the daughter of Osborne and Bertha Maria Smith. Joyce’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends; it could be a visit, going for a walk, playing card games or cooking Christmas Dinner. She enjoyed having company in her home and you would not be leaving without being offered a cup of tea and a sweet. Joyce loved collecting sea glass and driftwood, bowling, shopping, being the chauffeur to friends on outings, spending time with her grandchildren, going on vacations with her family and travelling to new and faraway places. She spent time volunteering in the community at the food bank, delivering meals on wheels, visiting senior care facilities, bringing pie to residents and helping out at Friends’n’ Food. After more than 15 years in administration, Joyce retired from the Cancer Foundation Registry at the Dixon Building, Halifax, N.S. July 1993. Joyce enjoyed a full and healthy life until her Alzheimer’s disease progressed. In spite of the Alzheimer’s, she found joy in the simple things in life including music, dancing, a good cup of tea and a piece of fudge. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Jocelyn) Mathieu, Dartmouth, Belinda (Allister) Fougere, Barrington and Marilyn (Maurice)Swaine, Barrington; seven grandchildren, Christie, Daniel, Melissa, James, Maria, Amy and Emma and seven great grandchildren, Addison, Lincoln, Keefer, Madeline, Connor, Josie and Lucy and nine nieces and five nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Irvine James Christie; sisters, Gladys Wickens, Janet Lawrence, Martha Smith (child); brothers, Alfred Smith and Clinton Smith (infant). A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at St. James Wesley United Church, Barrington Passage, July 8, 2018 at 2:00 P.M., Reverend Brenda McCurdy officiating. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. It gives us great peace knowing that Mom and Dad are together again.
