New Glasgow - George Albert MacKay, age 78, of Pleasant Street, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 25, 2018, surrounded by family. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John W. and Elsie F. (MacLean) MacKay. George drove long-distance trucks and moved mobile homes for John W. MacKay Ltd in early years and then for 30 years he drove cab for Mid-Town Taxi. He was a member of the local chapter of MADD; Meals on Wheels, New Glasgow Group; and a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. When he was young, he played hockey in the Rotary Hockey program. In 1950-51, he was the goalie for the New Glasgow Braves Pee-Wee team, coached by John Brother MacDonald and Foster Dickson. A lot remember him as “Poddie”. George was a quiet, unassuming, kindly man with a twinkle in his eye and always ready to pull a prank on someone.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman, making his own lures. George spent many enjoyable summers at Larry’s River.  He is survived by partner, Yvonne; daughter, Kim (Mark) Rafuse; son, Michael (Karen) MacKay; daughter, Cheryl (Tom) McNamara; grandchildren: Dayna (Tim), Shane (Tisha), Jessica, Emily, Erika, Adam, Cassie (Ian) and Josh; brother, Jamie (Betty) MacKay; sisters: Patricia MacKay; Carolyn (Bert) Livingstone; aunt, Keddy Humphreys; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife Claire, parents John W. and Elsie MacKay. The family would like to thank Drs. Farrell, Kwasnik, and MacLean, the VON and especially Ann Mckim RN, Palliative Care Nurse.
