Sister Mary Alma CND Losier

Sister Mary Alma CND Losier

Passed on: March 3rd, 2018

Sister Mary Alma Losier died on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness. Born in Chatham, New Brunswick on May 2, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Barry) Losier. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame on August 20, 1940 and made Profession on August 19, 1942.
Sister Alma began her multi-faceted teaching career at Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, Nova Scotia, where she taught courses to Grade XI students. Although she very much enjoyed her first year at Holy Angels Convent, Sister was assigned to study for a Master of Science degree at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, while at the same time teaching courses in the Home Economics Department at Mount Saint Bernard, Antigonish. Having obtained her Masters, Sister Mary Alma continued teaching courses in the Home Economics Department.
In 1967 Sister Mary Alma made a shift in her teaching career when she decided to study Theology, a decision she never regretted. After obtaining her Doctoral Degree from Notre Dame University, Indiana, in 1967, she began teaching in the Theology Department of Saint Francis Xavier University, where she remained until 1987. During this time she also taught courses in Theology and Scriptures Studies at Mount Saint Bernard College.
In 1993, Sister Mary Alma, semi-¬retired, was missioned to St. John Convent in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia where she taught courses in Scriptures Studies, and also tutored students in need of special help. After years of such a varied teaching career, two words describe Sister Mary Alma as a teacher, extreme dedication and commitment. If there was an easy way of accomplishing a task, Sister preferred the challenge of the hard road. Her goal in teaching was to enlighten her students to discern what is of real value in their lives.
In 2008, she was transferred to scenic Mabou, Nova Scotia. While absorbing the beauty of this scenic environment, Sister was inspired to complete her book of poetry which was published in 2011. Her book, titled “The Unfinished Script”, reveals her true mystic appreciation of creation and her deep Contemplative awareness of the Presence of God in all she encountered. In 2012, Sister Mary
Alma finally retired to Parkland Cape Breton, Sydney, Nova Scotia. If anyone deserved to retire, Sister Mary Alma Losier was that person.
In 2016, due to diminishing health, Sister moved to the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney, where she remained until her death.
She was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her five sisters, Sister Carmel, CND, Heloise (late Bill Hogan), Norma (late Edward Carten), Marie and Kathleen ‘Pam’ (late John Richard), and two brothers, Percy (late Marjorie Heffernan) and Barry ‘Bud’ (late Marian Steele).
Visitation for Sister Mary Alma Losier will be Wednesday, March 7 from 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, with a Bible Vigil at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Father Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
