With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother on March 2, 2018, at the St. Andrew's Terrace Long Term Care Facility, in Cambridge, Ontario. Cherished wife of the late Robert James Berkeley Fleming, and of her first husband, John Adair Woodward. Devoted mother of Berkeley (Linda), Michael (Sharon), Richard (Lynn), and Margot (Ken Ridley). Grandmother of David Fleming (Christiana MacDougall), Michael Fleming (Wendy McCurdy), Sarah Fleming, Andrew Fleming, Robert Fleming (Adrienne Rowan), Ashley Fleming (Joey Hamill), Matthew Ardill (Heather Davidson), Natasha Ardill, and Nick Ardill (Amanda Fudge). Great-grandmother of Bailey, Amelia, Sophie, Benjamin, Hannah, Isaac, Jack, Leyla, Kamryn, and Alexis. Predeceased by her brother, Thomas Pound, and her sisters, Betty Waddington, Judy Campbell, and Monica Thomas, Margaret will be missed by many nieces and nephews. She was born on October 19, 1919 in Whitemouth, Manitoba, the fourth child of Charles and Dorothy Pound. She attended St. John’s High School in the North End of Winnipeg, and then Queen’s University, until joining the Women’s Division and later becoming an officer in the RCAF. After losing both her first husband and their newborn child during the war, she worked for the YMCA, meeting Robert Fleming in Prince Rupert, where they married in 1945. Margaret resumed her education in the 1960s, completing Arts and Journalism degrees at Sir George Williams University and Carleton University, respectively. She worked as a secretary, parish administrator, journalist, and arts manager, in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Ottawa, and Vancouver. She was also a poet, collaborating with Robert Fleming on many of his vocal and choral works. Margaret had a deep commitment to her family, who will remember her as a warm, supportive, well informed, and highly engaged person, with wide-ranging interests. Burial will be at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Ottawa, and a celebration of Margaret’s life will be held in October, 2018. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Terrace (Cambridge), the Robert and Margaret Fleming Award for Composition Studies (Mount Allison University), or a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Andrew's Terrace for their compassionate care of our mother during her stay at the home.
