It is with sadness that we, the family, regret to announce the passing of our beloved father, son, brother and grandfather, Alexander MacDonald, age 72, of Sydney. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 4, 1946 in Sydney, Alex was the son of Hilda and the late Hector MacDonald.
Besides his father, Alex was predeceased by his sisters, Ann Louise Leith and Mary Margaret Gillis.
Alex leaves behind his mother, Hilda MacDonald; wife, Valerie (Mizzi) MacDonald; sons, Hector (Amanda) MacDonald and Justin (Melinda) Menard; daughter, Chantal (Curtis) Courtemanche; beloved grandchildren, Tres Menard, Brandon Menard, Tevin Menard, Beaux Menard, Rylin Brockett, Damian Courtemanche, and brothers, Frances (Karen) MacDonald, Peter (Trish) MacDonald and Danny (Deny) MacDonald.
Alex was a family man for he loved being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was always one for a good conversation or debate on any subject, as Alex knew a little bit about everything or so it seemed. Alex was an Assistant Terminal Manager for Marine Atlantic for 38 years and was never one to miss work for he was always there to help travelers or coworkers. Alex will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Alexander MacDonald will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Sunday, April 1, 2018. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1-2 p.m. with service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the funeral home reception area following the service. Interment will take place in St. Andrew's Parish Cemetery, Boisdale.
Donations in memory of Alex may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
