It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, poppy and brother, Alexander Finlayson, age 81, on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on November 26, 1936, Alex was the son of the late John and Violet (Bonnar) Finlayson.
Alex worked for Devco for over 30 years as a brusher, at both the Princess and Prince Collieries, retiring due to injuries.
Although a quiet, unassuming man, Alex enjoyed a good laugh, a great tune, family gatherings, an occasional drive in the country, a cup of tea by the water and staying close to home. Alex had a generous heart, even to a fault. He loved children, especially his own, and held a great love and respect for our vets.
In his early years, he was quite involved with the Florence Legion Branch 83, in Florence, being a member for many years, serving on the Visitation Committee for 10 years, helping out with the children’s sock hops, volunteering for various kitchen duties, from cutting potatoes for soup, to doing dishes, and playing in the Men’s and mixed dart leagues.
He is survived by his wife, Annette (Mouland); sons, Alex (Lynn), Florence and Danny (Nicole), Edmonton, AB; daughters, Jane (Donnie), Helene (Shelly), Wendy (Pearce), Sandra (Alex), Kathy (Sandy), all of North Sydney, Dorothy (Martin), Guelph, ON and Johnena (Charlie), North Sydney; step-children, George (Jen) Drake, Garfield (Shannon) Drake, Guelph, ON and Leah (Hubert) Mertens, Sydney Mines, 23 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy (Wilfred) Theriault and Kay (Vic) Gale; sister-in-law, Anne; brothers, Jack and Russell; numerous nieces and nephews; his in-laws, Bessie (John) Lahey, Della (Wally) Beal, Evelyn Hawco, Charles Mouland, Harold Mouland and George (Cathy) Mouland, and his former wife and mother of his children, Helen (Pero) Drake.

The family would like to thank Dr. Marek Knott, and Joanna for their many years of professional care and kindness, also in recent weeks, to the many staff (doctors and nurses especially) of the Northside General Hospital ER and 5th floor, The Cape Breton Regional ER, Floor 3A, and the ICU.
Visitation for Alex Finlayson will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines, on Thursday, April 5, 2018, from 7-9 p.m., a celebration of his life will take place Friday at 11 a.m. in Clyde Avenue, Baptist Church, with Rev. Brian Barron officiating.
