ABERCROMBIE – Arnold William John Fitzgerald, 80, Abercrombie, passed away Friday, April 6, 2018 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Jonquiere, Quebec, he was a son of the late Bill and Ruby (MacLellan) Fitzgerald.
Arnold was in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1955 to 1957, serving onboard HMCS Haida and the HMCS Quinte, was a Captain and Commanding Officer of the Emergency Unit (SWAT Team) in Quebec City during the 70’s, Commanding Officer of the Magdalen Islands, and retired after 25 years of service for the Quebec Provincial Police Force. He was proud of his time raising and breeding championship standard bred horses at the breeding farm Blue Haven that he established in Abercrombie, which was a haven for him and his family.
Surviving are daughters, Debbie (Kenneth) Banks, Pictou; Darlene (Wayne) Lumsden, Trenton; Donna Fitzgerald (Ray Hayman), West Branch; grandchildren, Johnathan, Derrick, Caitlin, Laura, Rebecca, Krista, Katie and Colby; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Tori, Sophia, Gracie, Nevaeh and Zoe; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Patricia “Pat” (Porter); brothers, James, Robert; sister, Evelyn.
In keeping with Arnold’s wishes his family will celebrate his life privately.
Donations in Arnold’s memory may be made to the Pictou County SPCA or any animal rescue charity.
Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
