Clare Weldon Wadden

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: April 22nd, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Clare Weldon Wadden who passed away peacefully at Harbourstone Enhanced Care on Sunday, April 22, 2018. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Clare was the son of the late James A. Wadden and E. Gertrude (Spencer). Born in 1928, he lived his early years in Port Morien, a place that remained special to him all of his life. Dad’s working life included positions at Eaton’s Department Store in Glace Bay, Pay-Master for the Dominion Coal and Steel Company, Purchasing Agent-Storekeeper at the Seaboard Power Plant and lastly as General Manager at the Cape Breton Regional Housing Authority where he finished his career in 1995. While at Eaton’s Department Store, he was lucky enough to meet and work with our mother, Florence Ferguson, who he married in St. Andrew’s Church, Sydney on Sept 7, 1953. They raised a family of five and resided in Port Morien, Glace Bay and finally in Westmount where they lived for forty-one years.
He is survived by his brother, Earle of Glace Bay; five children, Ronald (Kathy), Spencer (Maria), Howard, Calvin (Andrea), all of Sydney and Ann Elizabeth MacDonald (Gary) of George’s River; six grandchildren, Bradley, Melissa, Robert, Stephen, Jacob, Sarah and nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kayla, Ethan, Logan, Max, Lauryn, Colby, Darien and Maelynn. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Florence; brother, Freeman and his sister, Doris.
Dad enjoyed helping others and was a volunteer member of the Board of Directors for Saint Rita’s Hospital and Cape Breton County Homemakers. He was a Mason for over 60 years and belonged to the Thistle Lodge in Port Morien. Dad was a gifted athlete and played baseball, softball, and hockey in his younger years. He made many friendships playing sports that continued for his lifetime. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Dad and Mom loved to dance and anyone who saw them dancing together could see their loving partnership.
Dad and Mom enjoyed a healthy retirement and spent countless days enjoying their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends at the Baddeck cottage. We are thankful for all the lasting memories made there.
We would like to thank the staff at Williston House where Dad recently resided, and Margie and Elizabeth who all helped care for Dad. Also, a big thank you to Dad’s tarbish buddies with whom he was able to play cards until only recently.
Cremation will take place. As per Dad’s wishes there will be no visitation.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 2 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Rev. Sheldon Chant to officiate. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
