John Brian Whelan

Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia

Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia
Passed on: April 27th, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Brian Whelan at Harbourstone Enhanced Care on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the age of 74.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Gerald and Mary (MacNeil) Whelan.
Brian worked in the Composing Room at the Cape Breton Post for more than 35 years. He was a strong supporter of the Union and a trusted advocate for many. He was always a champion for the underdog. Brian was truly kind and giving in nature and took much pleasure in helping others. Words could never express what he meant to us “his family”, and to those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was very devoted to his faith and family. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish.
He is survived by his daughter, Treena (Noel Farrell), Halifax; son, Paul
(Rita), Sydney; sisters, Geraldine Templeton, Mass, Carolyn Whelan, Joanne Whelan, Josie Whelan, all of Sydney; brothers, Paul (Glynis) and Roy (Darlene), also of Sydney, and his grandchildren, Hollie, Hannah, and Mitchell, who brought him much joy.
Brian was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Susan (Mitchell); brothers, Michael and Paul in infancy, and Billy.
The family would like to thank the staff of Harbourstone for the wonderful care and compassion given to Brian during his illness.
A private family service will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made in Brian’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
In Brian’s own words “It’s been a hell of a ride!”
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
