Leona Brown

On Saturday, April 21, 2018 Leona Brown passed away at Vermilion Long Term Care in Vermilion, Alberta at the age of 84 years. Leona was born in West Montrose and spent most of her life in the Truro area, working at Lewis hat Factory, Stanfield’s and Crossley Carpet Mill. She was one of thirteen children and grew up in a time when girls were not supposed to swim, ride a bike or wear red shoes. As an adult she managed to do all three!

One might call her a late-bloomer. She learned to drive at the age of 46. Her first flight ever was to attend her son’s graduation from McMaster University; once she started though she never really stopped. Leona’s children moved to locations all over the world, and she did her best to visit them in each place, from Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, New York City, Kansas City and even Paris. Her family says that if a car, train or plane was going somewhere, she was happy to be in it.
Although Leona never really learned to dance, she did love music, especially old-time music and Nova Scotia artists Rita McNeil and Anne Murray. Song for the Mira was a favorite, and she was always asking someone to play it.
Leona loved to knit, sew, and crochet, but her love of reading may have surpassed all else. When her nose was in a book nothing else existed.
Others might suggest that she gave up a lot for her family, working double shifts and often going without to make sure they had what they needed, but she likely never saw it that way. Her mission in life was to raise her 6 children as best she could, making sure they knew right from wrong and could fend for themselves.
She will be missed for many things, but I think most of us will remember her sense of humor and that little grin that would appear when she was teased. Never at a loss for words, she took pride in having a smart answer for everyone and making them smile or laugh.
Safe travels Leona. We miss you.
Leona is survived by her children: James (Dinah) Brown of Meaford, ON, Sharon Brown of Vietnam, Harold Brown of Edmonton, AB, Angela (Mark) Venance of Streamstown, AB, Renée (Robert) Munroe of Hatchet Lake, NS, Melanie (Serge) Nolorgues of Paris, France; grandchildren Keri, Kenn, Jeremy and Ethan, great grandchildren: Abohin, Anghous and Chandler; brother Malcolm (Fern) Rushton of Truro NS; sisters Lois (Frank) Green and Ruth Rushton both of Great Village, NS. She was predeceased by her parents Urias and Sadie Rushton and siblings Carl, Audrey, Geraldine, Herbert, Ken, Milton (Shirley), Rhoda, Marjorie, and Clifford (Sue).

In keeping with Leona’s wishes she was cremated and will be remembered in a service in Nova Scotia this summer, date and location to be announced. For those wishing to make a donation please do so to the Portapique Cemetery or the charity of your choice.
