We the family of the late Gertie (Nearing) Bourgeois, age 92, wish to announce her peaceful passing at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay on Monday, May 28, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Waterford on June 25, 1925, Gertie was the daughter of the late David and Mary (MacIssac) Nearing.
"Mommy" as she was affectionally called by her 12 children, was an avid Montreal Canadians and Toronto Blue Jay fan. Jean Beliveau was Mommy's favorite Montreal Canadian. At the age of 75 Gertie attended her 1st Montreal Canadian game. Gertie had a passion for life. She loved spending time with her family and a field of friends at her dining room table with a good cup of tea or the occasional shot of whiskey. Gert's favorite time of the year was Christmas when her children and grandchildren would gather at the "House". Her grandchildren adored their grandmother referring to her as "Nanny Gert".
Gertie will be missed by her 12 cherished children, Nelson (Brenda), George Jr. (Doris), Beverly (Raymond) Boland, Raymond (Valerie), Charles (Maurina), Brian (Merle), Gwen (Wayne) Gracie, Leonella (Donald) Ferguson, all of Glace Bay, Michelle (Cecil) Gosbee, Inverness, Derek (Kathleen), Danny, Carolee (Shawn) MacNeil, also of Glace Bay. Also, 28 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren who will miss their Nanny Gert; sisters, Vera Nearing, B.C., Gladys Prior, Boston, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and her extended family at Victoria Haven Nursing Home.
Besides her parents, Gert was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, George "Hubby" Bourgeois (May 10, 2018); brothers and sisters, Mark, Cyril, Vertie, Mello, Ernie, Clara, Collette, Blanche and Francis.
Visitation for Gertie Bourgeois will be held 6 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at J.M. Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay (849-7617).
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Holy Cross Church with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A luncheon will follow the mass in the church hall. Interment will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Donations in Gertie's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.
