It is with great sadness that we, the family of John Charles MacNeil announce his passing at Sydney, Nova Scotia on June 8, 2018.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, John was the son of the late John Murdock MacNeil and Sarah (Burchell) MacNeil.
John spent his working life in retail working in various management roles with the Met and Canadian Tire. He was lovingly known as “John C. (Met)” in Glace Bay. As a lifetime North ender, John was also heavily involved at the former Sacred Heart Church and the Holy Angels Convent. Fondly referred to as “Papa John” his grandchildren were his heart and joy. John was also a dedicated sports fan who loved the New York Yankees. He also loved western movies and was a huge John Wayne fan.
John is survived by his spouse, Lorraine (Corriveau) MacNeil; his children, Mark MacNeil of Sydney, Michelle Samson (Jason) of Halifax, Monique MacKay (Damian) of Mira Gut and Michael MacNeil (Britney) of Sydney; his grandchildren, Joshua Samson, Christian Samson, Jeremiah Samson, Gabrielle Samson, Bradie MacKay, Samantha MacKay, Ella MacKay and Peter MacNeil; his siblings, Dan MacNeil (Jackie), Mary Matheson (Sheldon), Alberta “Bertie” Van de Riet (Chris), Brian MacNeil; his mother-in-law, “Joey” Corriveau, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
John is predeceased by his parents, John Murdock MacNeil and Sarah (Burchell) MacNeil and his aunts and uncles, including Uncle Dan “Ninnie” MacNeil.
John’s Funeral will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church located at 381 Whitney Ave., Sydney, NS B1P 5A8 on June 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow.
A visitation will be held at Chant’s Funeral home located at 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, NS B1S 2G8 on June 11, 2018 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
