In his early years, Stel worked for the British Canadian Co-op, and later was a long-time employee at Capital Drugs Ltd. until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of Clyde Avenue Baptist Church in Sydney Mines where he actively attended worship services, the men’s group, and served on various church committees over the years. Stel leaves behind his beloved six grandchildren, Gregory, Joel, and David Craig of Alberta, John, Adam and Seth Gillan of New Brunswick; his three adorable great-grandchildren, Russell Gough of Ontario, Audriana and Tatum Gillan of New Brunswick; his many dear nieces, nephews and cousins; his special aunt, Nina of Brantford, Ontario; and his lifelong friend, Eddie Bruce.
Besides his parents, Stel was predeceased by his wife of 54 years and the love of his life, Lilly (nee Lillian Bailey), in 2010 and by his only sibling, Lynette Layton of Kentville, Nova Scotia in 2015.
There will be no public visitation by the request of the family. A funeral service will be held at Clyde Avenue Baptist Church in Sydney Mines at 1 p.m. on Monday July 23, 2018 with Rev. Brian Barron officiating. There will be a reception to follow in the church hall.
