Burgess Havelock  Penny

It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Burgess Penny, announce his passing on Friday, July 20, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bras d’Or on October 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Jack and Emma (Clarke) Penny.
Dad worked from an early age of 12 years old in the coal mines, after retirement he helped run Penny’s Taxi, and he also worked at CN. Dad loved the outdoors; he hunted but his greatest passion was fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards. He was a member of the Sydney Mines and Bras d’Or Pensioners Club, where he enjoyed the Saturday night dances.
Left to mourn his passing are his four daughters, Patty Penny, North Sydney, Brenda McAdam (late Bill), Sydney Mines, Jean Penny (Jack), North Sydney and Alice Feit (Chicken), Sydney Mines; one son, Jonathan, Edmonton; his step daughters, Georgina Burton (Blair) and Gloria Blinkhorn (Adrian); sisters, Gerti Bonnar, Sydney Mines and Debbie Arsenault (Oscar), Lower Sackville; brothers, Steward Penny (Noreen) and Ricky Penny (Laura), Black Rock; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Robert MacPhee (Jessie); sister-in-law, Eileen Keeping, and his loving 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice (MacDonald) Penny, mother of his children; second wife, Catherine (Beaton) Penny; his sons, Robert and Burgess Jr.; grandson, David; sisters, Dot MacDougall, Jane Hannagan, Hilda Marsh, Joyce MacPhee, Emma Matthews and Mable Osmond; brother, Tren, and in infancy, Eva, Mabaline, and Sam.
We would like to thank Dr. O’Grady and the staff of Northside General 4 West for their care. To the wonderful staff of Cara House, Northside Community Guest Home; your kindness and care for Dad will never be forgotten. Thank You to Manning at Jobes Funeral Home for his compassion and professionalism.
The family will receive visitors and friends on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. followed by a service at 4 p.m. in JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines officiated by Deacon Greg Murphy. Reception to follow at the Sydney Mines Seniors and Pensioners Hall.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Haley Street Adult Services or a charity of one’s choice.
