POTHIER, Louis “Gilbert”, Cpl. (Ret.); C.D. - 95 of Veterans Place Yarmouth, formerly of Pinkney’s Point, Yarmouth Co. passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 20, 2018 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born August 17, 1922 in Sluice Point, Yarmouth Co., Gilbert was the son of the late Germain and Frances (Surette) Pothier. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Geraldine (Saulnier); his children Simon (Connie) Quispamsis , N.B.; Susan (Ruben) Doucette, Pinkney’s Point; Gail (Glendon) Surette, Melbourne and Sheldon (Janet) Wolfville. “Papa” leaves behind nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Jeanette Leblanc (Yarmouth) and Verna Taylor (Dartmouth). Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Hector; sisters, Augusta Burke, Theresa Charbonneau and Celine Hines. Gilbert was a retired soldier (1942-1946, 1953-1972) and heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 155 Wedgeport and a veteran of WWII (West Nova Scotia Regiment). Gilbert was with the Canadian Army when Apeldoorn, Netherlands was liberated. When asked to recount his wartime experience, he expressed compassion towards both the Dutch and the young German soldiers. After the war Gilbert worked at Cosmos Imperial Mills in Yarmouth before rejoining the Canadian Forces in 1954. He served with the Canadian Engineer’s in Chilliwack, BC, the former West Germany, Alert, Petawawa and Barrington. Gilbert retired to Pinkney’s Point in 1972. He worked as a heavy machine operator for contractors, including Aberdeen Paving, before retiring at age 65. Gilbert was an exceptional man. He led his life with honor and pride. He demonstrated compassion, honesty, and kindness daily. Gilbert loved his wife and his family with all his heart. The family would like to send a special thanks for such wonderful care of their father and husband to both the staff and volunteers at Veteran’s Place and to Dr. Webster and 3-East at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Visitation took place from 7-9 pm. Monday with a Legion Service (Branch No. 155) at 7:30 p.m. and prayers at 8 p.m. from H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 24 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Melbourne, Father Henry Smolenaars officiated. Internment followed in the Saint Raphael Cemetery, Pinkney’s Point. Donations in memory of Gilbert may be made to the Veterans Place Bus Fund or to Saint Raphael’s Cemetery, Pinkney’s Point.
