The family of Eldred “Sonny” Mercer announce his peaceful passing on August 12, 2018 at the New Waterford Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Eldred and Ester Mercer.
Sonny was employed with DEVCO working in the Machine Shop. He was a member of the Sydney Golden K’s and in his earlier years he volunteered with St. Mary’s Scouts where one of his greatest memories was taking the Scouts to Newfoundland. Sonny was always at his happiest when he was singing, he was always honored to be asked to sing at any Church for any function. Sonny’s fondest memories was the time spent singing with Don Crouse and Friends.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Mary Mercer; stepsons, Calvin, Scott and Bruce; sister, Marjorie, Ontario; several nieces and nephews and special step grandchildren, Clark Howley, Emma Howley, Charlotte Howley.
Besides his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his first wife, Helen MacSween; sisters, Eileen, June, Elsie and one brother, Bill.
Following Sonny’s wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation or St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
