Martin Stephen Fleming passed away peacefully on November 7, 2018, in his home, surrounded by his family.
Stephen was born on September 14, 1951 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the oldest of three.
Stephen was predeceased by his mother, Katherine Patricia (Hession) Fleming and his father, John Joseph Fleming.
Following graduation from Keith Academy in Lowell, in 1969, he attended Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, graduating in 1974. Stephen met his wife, Darlene MacMullin, outside the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax. They soon began a relationship and were married on January 8, 1977, in Saint Mary’s Church at East Bay, N.S. and so, began their journey.
They have three children whom Stephen leaves behind, Sean Christopher, Katherine Teresa, and Mary Anne (Bill). All three children graduated from university and are a testament to Steve’s positive character, drive and outgoing personality.
Steve and Darlene lived in Halifax the last 34 years, establishing themselves in both the education and business communities. Steve had a passion for all levels of sports and was active with his kids and their friends in basketball, football, baseball and cross-country. Steve also known as “Pops”, was a proud supporter of the Saint Mary’s University basketball, football and hockey programs.
Steve was well known for his passion for all things “Boston Sports”. He loved the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics. He had the pleasure of watching his beloved Red Sox win the World Series just a few weeks ago. All the family dogs were named after the Boston Red Sox.
Steve worked the last 30 years at Municipal Group of Companies with dedication, loyalty, leadership and humility, where he was a mentor to many. His motto was: “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem”. As his employer stated, “Steve was always part of the solution.”
Steve’s true passion was his family. He cared about his wife and kids with unparalleled dedication and devotion. His happiest times were spent in Seabrook Beach, New Hampshire, East Bay, N.S. and most recently, Pointe-du-Chêne, New Brunswick. He was the paternal leader of his family and would do absolutely anything for them.
Stephen leaves behind his brothers, John (Maura), Kevin (Susan) and their children, Ellen (Gary), Patrick and Michael.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish at 1725 Oxford St., Halifax, N.S., on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 1 p.m.

A reception will immediately follow the service at The Arm’s Public House located in The Lord Nelson Hotel, 1515 South Park St., Halifax, where we will celebrate Stephen’s life with food, drink and many stories.
Interment will follow at a later date in Saint Mary’s Parish Cemetery, East Bay, N.S.
The family thanks the medical teams who cared for Stephen, allowing him to spend his final days at home.
