O’CONNELL, James Clifford “Joc” – age 93, Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, formerly of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born April 13, 1925 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Guy and Sarah (Doucette) O’Connell. Joc was a veteran of the second World War, having served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. After the war, he served with the Black Watch at Camp Aldershot helping train troops for the Korean War. He was a retired assistant manager with NSLC. Aside from being a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth, Joc was a champion bowler, for which he was inducted in the Yarmouth Town and County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. In his younger years, he also enjoyed playing softball as well as fishing and hunting with his sons. He is survived by his wife, Janetta “Jeanette” E. (Nickerson) O’Connell, as well as by his children, Wayne O’Connell, Warren (Patty) O’Connell, Neil (Rhonda) O’Connell, Rick O’Connell, Terry (Phyllis) Darby, Debbie Gallant and Koren O’Connell (Barry Smith), as well as by 14 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and a sister, Jean Lockhart, Saint John, NB. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Morris and a sister, Pauline Blades. Visitation took place from 2-4 & 6-8 Thursday at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, where a Legion/funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 23, Rev. A. D. “Bill” Newell officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. Donations in memory of Joc may be made to IWK Foundation or to MADD Canada.
