John David Murphy

John David Murphy passed away less than five months after being diagnosed with cancer.
He will be forever missed by his wife, Theresa Forgeron; his daughter, Susan Smith and husband, Paul Smith of Bedford; his daughter, Debbie Murphy of Bedford; his son, John Murphy and wife, Sheri Murphy of Middle Sackville; his son, Matthew Murphy and wife, Laura Oxenham-Murphy of Toronto; his stepdaughter, Brittany MacNeil and husband, Jeff MacNeil of Halifax; and stepdaughter, Bridget MacIntyre of Halifax; together with his grandchildren, Justin Kelsie, Ben and Hannah Smith, and James Murphy.
He was predeceased by his wife, Linda Murphy and his parents, Dr. Clarence and Maude Murphy of Charlottetown, PEI.
John’s involvement with the legal profession spanned many years. After clerking at the Supreme Court of Canada, John practiced law at Stewart McKelvey and its predecessor firms for 27 years. He next joined the Nova Scotia Supreme Court in 2001 serving as a trial judge. Further, John contributed to his community by actively participating in many professional, community and church organizations and committees. John enjoyed his work, his colleagues, and travel, but most of all, he prized the happy time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
John was a humble and understated man, with a wonderful sense of humour. He was a wise and well-respected jurist who consistently acted with integrity and compassion. We are grateful for his guidance and example.
We wish to thank the medical professionals who were involved with John’s care, especially the 8th Floor Hematology Staff, Centennial Building, QEII VG site, who delivered exemplary care during the final stages of John’s life. We are indebted to you.
We invite you to join us as we celebrate John’s life. His wake will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax from 2 – 4 p.m. and from 7 – 9 p.m.
