Passed away at Tiffany Village on December 21st, 2018 in her 93rd year. Predeceased by her husband, William D. Hodder in 2004, her daughter Blanche Hodder (Pierre Doyon) in 2016, and sisters Verna (Rideout) Hodder and Velma (Rideout) Kelley. Leaving to celebrate her life and memory, her children, Winifred Sargent (Gary), Sylvia Worrall (Graham), David Hodder (Donna) and Kathleen Hodder; her grandchildren, Terry Lee Hodder, Karen Sargent, Gregory Sargent (Stacy), Michelle Kent (Michael), James Worrall (Natalie Julien), and Jennifer Bonnell (David); her great-grandchildren, Zoe Worrall-Julien, Lily Sargent, Quinn Sargent, Leo Worrall-Julien, and Rory Sargent; her sister Vida (Rideout) Van Blarcom and her brother Edgar Rideout. She also leaves a network of friends and extended family, especially Melva Canning, Bette Mercer, Don and Fay Rideout, and Marta Rupesinghe. Born in Hampden, Amelia (Rhoda) grew up in Burlington. Upon completing school, she obtained a teaching certificate and moved to Birchy Bay, where she met her dashing sailor when he was home on leave. They married in 1945 and began their family in 1946. She and Bill were strong supporters of Confederation with Canada in 1949 as they saw this as the route to the best future for their children. In 1956 she returned to teaching, and in the 1960s she began studying for a degree at MUN’s “summer school”. In 1970 she and Bill moved to St. John’s where she completed her degree, graduating in 1972 with a B.A. Ed. She returned to teaching in St. John’s and St. Phillips and concurrently pursued first her M.Ed. (1977) and then, for fun, her B.A. (1979). She retired in 1984. Amelia was a lifelong learner and advocate of education. She was a reader, a gardener, a sewer, a knitter, a community volunteer. She loved being a grandmother but her great-grandchildren were an extra bonus. In 2016, when her health began to fail, she moved to Tiffany Village. The family wish to thank the staff at Tiffany Village, who cared for her with professionalism and compassion. The family also thanks Dr. M. Penton. Cremation has occurred and a celebration of her life will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s, at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4th, 2019. Visitations will be held at 2 pm and 7 pm on Thursday, January 3rd. Messages of condolences can be left at barretts.ca. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Health Care Foundation (healthcarefoundation.ca).
