It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Popovich, age 87, beloved husband, father, uncle and friend, on Thursday, December 27, 2018. Michael passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, right where he wanted to be.
Born in Sydney Mines on July 29, 1931, Michael was the son of the late Thomas and Gerifina (White) Popovich. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Michael began his working career at Sydney Steel, and retired from Devco in 1992. Michael was a deeply spiritual man and passed it on to his children and grandchildren. He was very knowledgeable in current affairs and politics, and had many fiery debates with family and friends. Michael was an avid gardener and took great pride in his vegetables and flowers. Michael enjoyed the simple things in life; spending summers al Little Pond Beach and sledding down the hills at Ocean St. with his children.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Violet (Boutilier); son, Greg (Karen); daughters, Darlene, Anita (Brian), Ann, and Michelle (John Wayne); seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Michael was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda, six years to the day that he passed away; brothers, Johnny, Peter, and Danny, and sisters, Veronica and Marg.
Michael’s family would like to thank Dr. Peter Poulos and the Palliative Care Team, the VON, and Susan and Heather, for all the care and compassion shown to Michael.
Cremation has taken place. His family will receive visitors on Sunday, December 30, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main St., Sydney Mines.
The funeral Mass will take place on Monday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
