Yvette Margaret Walton

Passed peacefully away on Thursday Dec. 27th in her 81st year, Yvette Margaret Walton, formerly of London, ON. Yvette started her teaching career in Lakehead, ON and moved to St. John’s NL to accept a position at Memorial University as a professor of Physical Education in Sept. 1965. She held this position until her retirement. She was a pioneer of women’s sports particularly in Track & Field, Badminton, and Volleyball. In 1966, Yvette won the Provincial Ladies Singles Badminton Championship. In 1969, she coached the NL Track and Field team in the first Canada Summer Games. In 1994, Yevette was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Hall of Fame. When Yvette retired from Memorial University she became involved in the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland (SPAN). She was Executive Director from 2001-2016. She implemented many programs for single parents including the Food and Clothing bank, Back to School Program, and arranged sponsors for single parent families at Christmas time with hampers and gifts. Leaving to mourn, Margaret Acreman, founding member of SPAN and many friends including Lorraine Power and Brenda Bishop. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home at 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday Dec 30th from 2-4 p.m. with a Memorial Service to follow in The Carnell Memorial Chapel at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland (SPAN).
