James Patrick (Jimmy) Linegar

Passed peacefully away on December 28, 2018. Born on February 4, 1936 to William Linegar and Bridget Rodgers. Besides his parents, he is predeceased in life by his brother William and wife Nellie, sisters Stella and husband Eric Martin, Florence and husband David Yetman. Leaving with fond memories his friend and fellow musician Ryan Jacobs, brothers Tom (Elizabeth), Jackie, Albert (Gladys), Reg, Allan (Betty), sister Betty Lamkin (Tim). As well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. At the age of 13, Jimmy’s life-long love of country music began. The guitar became his instrument and Hank Snow his influence. Known as The Kid Ranger, he rose to prominence in the 1950s and 60s, first gaining recognition on local radio stations. His radio popularity aided his success in touring Newfoundland. He was regarded as a pioneer of country music from Newfoundland and Labrador. He made numerous appearances at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in St. John's. In recent years his musical world continued to grow with feature performances in Avalon Ramblers, EastWind, Country Pickin' Pals and Ghosts of Grand Ole Opry. He was also a musical instrument builder and restorer, notably building his own Martin style acoustic guitars. One of his greatest accomplishments was to see his work recorded and published on CD entitled Golden Strings, featuring his unique flatpicking guitar style and crisp vocals. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. from St. Patrick’s Church. Cremation to follow. Burial will take place at a later date.
