It is with profound sadness and broken hearts we, the family of Audrey Bernadine Mackie, 81, announce her peaceful passing on January 1, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Born on August 16, 1937, Audrey was raised in New Waterford and attended Holy Angels High School before working at the Unemployment Office until the birth of her children.
Audrey was active in her community as a member of the KOC Ladies Axillary, St. Agnes Church Choir and St. Leonard’s Parish. Audrey was a keen and avid card player, regularly playing with friends for fun but more seriously in the Annual Family Boxing Day Tarabish Tournament, being crowned champ multiple times over the years!
She is survived by her sons, Shaun (Joanna) of Brantford, Ontario and Blair (Scott) of Westmount, Nova Scotia; as well as the lights of her life, granddaughters, Connor and Caelin. Audrey was also blessed with a large, supportive extended family of nieces, nephews and many, many cousins whom she loved so very dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband and soulmate, Ray; parents, Daniel and Effie (nee McLellan); brothers, Joseph “Medjuck” (Maggie), Martin (Laura), Dan Hughie (Irene) and sister/best friend, Mary “Lish” (Bernard) Wilcox.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial in St. Agnes cemetery followed by a luncheon at the KOC, Plummer Ave, all are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brother Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Nova Scotia SPCA/Cape Breton Animal Shelter.
We want to extend our profound thanks to the exceptional staff of the CBRH. Your professionalism, kindness and caring will stay with us forever. And when the end came, Audrey chose it on her own terms. She will forever be our mother, aunt, cousin, friend and the undisputed Queen of the Cove.
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
