WHALEN, BETTY JEAN - Betty J. Whalen of Fredericton, NB and formerly of Mount Hope, Penniac, NB passed away May 29, 2011 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Betty was born in Penniac in 1932, a daughter of the late Hazen Shaw and Jennie (Clayton) Shaw Johnson. She was a graduate of Fredericton High School and worked for several years at CFNB radio station. After living in Montreal, Quebec for a number of years, she returned to Fredericton. Betty lived a simple lifestyle and enjoyed gardening, cooking and watching the birds and animals on her property. Her many talents included knitting and crocheting items that she either sold as a vendor at Boyce Market or gave away to the Fredericton Community Kitchen or elementary schools in the area. Her children and grandchildren were first in her life as well as many other children she took into her home while living in Montreal. Betty is survived by her children, Mica Whalen, Fredericton, NB, Miriam Mielus, Arizona, USA, Graeme Whalen (Vanessa), Vancouver, BC, Stephen Whalen, Fredericton, NB and Barry Pipestem, Toronto, ON; her grandchildren, Emily, Melissa, Aaron, Terrance and Jessie; her sister, Judy Flewelling (Wendell), Nackawic, NB; her aunt, Flora Clayton, Penniac, NB; several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her step-father, Fred Johnson.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home, 160 York St., Fredericton, NB on Thursday, June 2nd, 2011 from 12 noon until 2 p.m. when a funeral service will be held with Rev. Ryan Farrell and Rev. Carl and Evelyn Brewer officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the Fredericton SPCA.
