It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband and father, Ross MacIntyre on Friday, May 27, 2011, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Glace Bay, Ross was the son of the late Ambrose and Patricia (Stewart) MacIntyre.
Along with his parents, Ross was predeceased by his brothers, Ambrose ‘Bo’ and Daryl.
Left to mourn his absence, love and words of wisdom are the love of his life, Carole (Gouthro) MacIntyre, wife of 38 years; his loving daughters, Nicolle, Port Hawkesbury, and Heather (Roy), Lower Sackville; his pride and joys, grandchildren Kelsey and Jonah; sisters, Betty (Edward) Langer, Newfoundland, Sheila (Dan) Langer, Newfoundland, Gail (Kevin) Lynk, Glace Bay, and Patricia (Bob deceased) Young, Kitchener; and Aunt Lollie (Richard) Penny, New Aberdeen.
A believer in lifelong education, Ross practised what he preached. He graduated from Teachers’ College in Truro in 1973. In 1983, he graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree. In 1991, he graduated from Acadia University with a Diploma specializing in Special Education. For over 30 years, Ross dedicated his life to his job as an educator within the Strait Regional School Board. He taught Grade 2 at Port Hastings Consolidated, then worked as an Educational Assessor for 12 years, and returned to the classroom to teach Grade 3, first at Centennial Elementary School, then Tamarac Education Centre. Ross was a member of the Port Hawkesbury Marching Band where he played the bass drum. He enjoyed participating in the parades and meeting new people on their travels.
Upon retiring in 2005, Ross began his life as a world traveller. He and Carole took many trips together and with friends. He really loved life and wanted to live each day to the fullest. Ross loved nothing better than spending time with family and friends, sharing many stories and lots of laughs. He also enjoyed gardening and yard work, as well as sitting by the pool at “the Resort”. Ross will be forever remembered by family, friends and colleagues for his great sense of humour, his wonderful smile, his quick wit and his infectious laugh.
As a member of St. Joseph Parish in Port Hawkesbury, Ross had a strong devotion to his faith and a profound spirituality to his church.
At this time, we, the family, would like to take this opportunity to thank the nurses of the Progressive Care Unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish for the kindness, care and gentleness shown to Dad while under your care. To the nursing staff at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston we extend a heartfelt ‘hug’ for your patience and professionalism shown to our family during our time of need. Each member of the medical team made Dad’s transition more bearable. With love we send you into the arms of God.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, June 3, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. with vigil service at 2 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Mass celebrating Ross’ life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.
