It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Anthony McKinnon, age 63, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, June 13, 1955, David was the son of the late Thomas and Theresa (Burke) McKinnon. He was employed for a number of years with Angel Manufacturing and George MacKeigan’s Home Heating as an oil burner mechanic. David was a jack of all trades, he enjoyed tinkering with repairs of old cars, going for drives around town and participating in local parades.
David is survived by his wife, Norma (MacLean) McKinnon; by his son, Travis; a grandson, Brent and his mother, Lisa Young; his sisters, Theresa (Bill) MacDougall, St. Catharine’s, Debbie McKinnon (Robert), Marie McKinnon, both of North Sydney; brothers, Tom McKinnon, North Sydney, Gerard McKinnon, Mississauga, Hughie McKinnon, Ottawa, also by several nieces and nephews, by his faithful canine companion, “Moe Moe”.
Besides his parents David was predeceased by his son, Trevor in 2000; by his father and mother-in-law, Norman and Mary MacLean; brothers-in-law, Sid MacLean, George MacLean; sisters-in-law, Josephine Fullom and Kathleen MacLean; nephews, Russell MacLean Jr. and Christopher MacLean; grandniece, Charmaine Cantwell.
The family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kohlsmith, palliative care and the nursing staff of 4West at the Northside General Hospital for the care given to David during his illness, a special thanks to April MacLean and her children and Mike MacLean for the kindness shown to David and Travis.
By request there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
