Dorothy Castle
Born Dorothy Mae Gilmer in Woodrow Saskatchewan, Feb 22nd, 1919. Passed on Jan 3rd, 2019 in Parksville, BC. Our mother, a former resident of Prince Albert and area for many years, passed away peacefully at Stanford Place in Parksville. She was a few weeks short of turning 100 years old and had a long and fruitful life. She was predeceased by her husband Herbert (Bert) Castle and her sisters Verna Grant and Margaret Hooker. Survived by her loving sons Jim, Herb (Ashley), Verne (Gladys) and her brother Bill Gilmer (Dorothy) of Saskatoon, plus 6 grandchildren (Robin, Graeme, Wylie, Jamie, Aaron, Jordan). The third daughter of John and Lilliam Gilmer, Dorothy was raised on the family farm near Woodrow Sask. Dorothy moved to Prince Albert around 1939 and worked at the Sanatorium until she contracted TB herself. While recovering from that, she met and then married Bert Castle They lived in Prince Albert for many years and raised their three sons. Dorothy was a lab/x-ray tech and worked at Humphries Clinic, Indian Health Services and the Community Clinic. Our mother was a kind and caring person who worried about people and she would speak up and become an advocate for any person or group she thought suffered any unfairness or abuse. She was also ahead of her time and a liberal, free thinking person who promoted equality for all people and had strong opinions on religion, politics, ethics and values. She inherited a keen sense of humor and passed that on. There will be no funeral service, but a burial of her ashes will take place at St Mary’s cemetery at a later date.
