Herbert Gideon Bown

Born: February 22nd, 1943

Passed on: February 11th, 2019

Born in the remote Newfoundland out port of Badger’s Quay, Herb left at the age of 16 to pursue higher education in St. John’s and later Halifax and Ottawa. He was intelligent, energetic, curious, and very down to earth, which lead him to a distinguished career in early computing and telecommunications in government and business. He earned the Ontario Association of Professional Engineers Gold Medal in 1983 and the Order of Canada in 1984 for his pioneering work in coding graphic images and for a variety of discoveries in the field of image communications and display systems. In his later years, Herb devoted himself to the community of Change Islands, its future, its people, and the preservation of their culture, back in his home province of Newfoundland, where his heart always lay. He continued to positively affect those around him with his warm presence, exuberant personality, great sense of humour and love of music after moving to Canmore, AB to live at Morningstar House in Origin at Spring Creek. His love of fun and all things silly endeared him to the staff. Herb’s family would like to extend our most heartfelt and sincere thanks to the wonderful, loving, kind, and dedicated health care team at Morningstar House who made Herb’s final years of life as meaningful, fun and love-filled as possible, despite his advancing Alzheimer’s disease. Our many thanks also goes to the fantastic team of companion care visitors from Transparent Concierge who kept Herb entertained in so many different ways. Herb, or Herbie as he became known over the past year, was predeceased by his parents, and siblings Earl, Ken and Shirley. He is survived by his sister Hilda, his wife Maureen Woodrow, his sons Stephen, Michael, and David, and their mother Sharon, his step-children Colin and Kristin, and his grand-children Andrew, Isla, Keean, Clara, and Charlie. Cremation has already taken place. There will be a private ceremony to scatter his ashes in Newfoundland in the spring. Condolences may be left at www.bowriverfuneral.com.
