Jimmy Alexander Selfridge

Jimmy Alexander Selfridge

It is with heavy hearts that David and Susan announce the peaceful passing of their Dad, Jim Selfridge, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, at the age of 91.
Jim was born January 20, 1928, to Samuel and Willena (Carr) Selfridge, and lived his entire life in Sydney Mines.
In 1953 Jim married the love of his life, Audrey MacCuish and together they shared the joys of raising two children, which was further enriched in 1988 by the arrival of granddaughter Lauren. They spent many happy years enjoying family vacations, travelling, music, dancing and many summers at the cabin at Kempt Head. They led a very active life together with outdoor activities, shared with a strong circle of friends. Following Audrey’s passing in 1992, after 38 years of marriage, Jim continued to lead a very full life of fishing, golfing (even achieving two holes in one), gardening, travelling and summers at the cabin. His love of family was always first, and his life was further enriched with the arrival of great-grandson Tobi in 2015. He was always ready to assist others in very practical ways. He was a man of wit and wisdom and had a genuine interest in people, both young and old.
Jim had a wonderful career as a sales representative for Carnation Company that became part of the Nestle Food Company until his retirement at the end of 1990. He took pride in both the product and the people he served. He met many wonderful people during his travels with his work.
Jim was a dedicated member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder for forty-nine years, choir member, a member of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Men’s Fellowship and on various other committees through the years. He also participated in the work of the Presbytery of Cape Breton which serves the Presbyterian Congregations of Cape Breton.
Jim is survived by his son David (Sylvia) in BC; his daughter Susan Morrison in Dartmouth; his granddaughter Lauren (Ben) and great-grandson Tobi in BC.
He is also survived by sister Willena MacKinnon and brother Gordon (Irene) Selfridge; sisters-in-law Merle MacCuish, Christine MacCuish and Joan MacLeod, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife Audrey; son-in-law Michael Morrison, and sisters; Jean, Agnes and Jessie.
At Jim’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating his life will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
