Woody Hayes
HAYES, WOODY - Woody Hayes, of Riverview, at the age of 72, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, following a lengthy illness. Born in Sommerville, Mass., USA, he was the son of the late Ralph and Ethel (Smith) Hayes. He will be forever remembered by Jackie, his loving wife of 47 years, children Kim Williams (Kevin), Donna Green (Weldon) and Mike Hayes (Shelley) all of Riverview, five precious grandchildren; Marty, Kelsey, Veronica, Brad and Bailey, cousin, David Smith (Barb) and their children Danny and Greg, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving uncle Frank and aunt Dot. Woody enjoyed a life long career in teaching at Harrison Trimble High School having retired in 1997 after 29 years of service. A true loyal Trojan, he was very active at Trimble, where he was the head football coach from 1968-1979, leading the team to seven Provincial Championships. He also coached Trimble's boys baseball team and the girls softball team. Besides his passion for sports at Harrison Trimble, he coached the school debating team from 1972-1974, and took great pride in promoting Canadian Literature with trips to Montreal and Toronto to meet with great Canadian Authors. His love for life went well beyond the walls of Harrison Trimble High School, Woody was also head coach of the Riverview Mustangs Football Team. He was inducted to the Sports Hall of Fame at St. F X. University in 1992 and the Moncton Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Woody also proudly served in the US Marine Corps. After his retirement, he traveled and spent winters in Florida with Jackie and their close friends, and enjoyed many special moments with his cherished grandchildren. Above all, his life's passion was his love for his beautiful wife, Jackie.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview (869-2007) on Friday from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM, with parish prayers and sharing of memories to take place at 8:30 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Riverview on Saturday June 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM.
