George Richard Kyte

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Richard Kyte on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Born in Sydney on July 18, 1931, to the late Peter and Bridget (Healey) Kyte, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years Shirley; his brother Leo in infancy and sisters Rose and Mary. Survived and sadly missed by son, Alan; daughters, Sheila (Ron), and Kelly (Kyle); grandchildren, Thea, Allison, Rachel and Ben; siblings, Veronica, Irene, Pauline, Joseph, Patrick, Bernard, Kevin, and Leo and many loving nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
George began his career at Eastern Light and Power as a mail boy and soon after trained for appliance service, a skill he enjoyed and continued to hone over many years. For the remainder of his career, he was a teacher at the Cape Breton Regional Vocational School. He was a talented woodworker who put his heart and soul into every project creating wonderful furnishings and mementos that will be forever cherished. Throughout his life George was a trusted mentor to family and friends alike, willingly offering assistance in everything from home repairs to quiet listening.
George and Shirley led an active social life as skaters, rarely missing a skating dance. They also valued their strong connection to the Cape Breton Lebanese community. The family George and Shirley created together meant everything to them, and George spent as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as Gid, a tribute to his Lebanese roots.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nursing staff of 3A at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the wonderful level of care and comfort provided during this time.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgoeys Parish, 40 Cabot Street, Sydney on Friday, April 12, at 11 a.m., with Father Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care (Cape Breton Regional Hospital) or a charity of your choice.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or emailed to sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
