Joseph McNally

With shattered hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Anthony McNally on April 16, 2019, in Halifax at the age of 41. He peacefully passed to Heaven wrapped in love. Joe was born and raised in Sydney, NS, to Joyce (Slade) McNally and Joseph McNally. He was the world’s best baby brother to Cathy and Dave. In July 2004, Joe married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Jan. With all one’s heart, Joe’s happiest moments in life were when his four children were born: Paige Carmel (11), Lily (angel baby), Cohen Joseph (8) and Judd Garrison (2). We take comfort in knowing that his spirit will live on in his three beautiful children.
Joe attended Riverview Rural High School followed by Saint Mary’s University (Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, 2001). He received an LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick Law School in 2007. Joe clerked for McInnes Cooper law firm from 2007-2008. He was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2008 and then worked as an associate for McInnes Cooper. Joe quickly became a well-respected lawyer in the area of Corporate and Commercial Law and Asset Recovery. Joe most recently worked at the Dalhousie University Legal Council Office from 2012 until his diagnosis in 2017.
Joe was an amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend. Joe was most known for his work hard, play hard attitude, his love for the outdoors, his infectious personality and witty sense of humour. Joe loved to travel and was passionate about canoeing, camping and in particular outback camping in Kejimkujik National Park. For Joe, there was nothing better than exploring the outdoors with his family. Joe’s journey with cancer was an inspiration to everyone. He was a fighter in all aspects of his life.
In addition to his immediate family, Joe is survived by mother-in-law, Carmel Mullins (Boutilier), father-in-law, Gary Mullins, sister-in-law, Holly Vassallo (Shawn), brothers-in-law Garry Mullins and Paul Mitchell and four nieces: Emily McNally (Dave and partner Julie Keeping), Brooklynne and Bhreagh Marsh (Cathy) and Sorsha Vassallo (Holly and Shawn).
Joe, you have left us far too soon, but you have touched every one of our lives and you will never be forgotten. We love you.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 23 from 6-8 p.m., at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive. Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Parish in Upper Tantallon, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Joe was a storyteller and in keeping with his fun-loving energy, we invite you to share your stories of Joe with us. These can be sent to joemcnally.memories@gmail.com.
