Jean L. Maillette

Jean Maillette passed away at home with his loving family by his side on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Born in Trois-Rivières on October 5, 1945 he was the son of the late Marcel and Béatrice (Lamothe) Maillette.
Jean was a dedicated member of the Canadian Coast Guard, graduating in the first class of Officers from the Canadian Coast Guard College as a Navigation Officer in 1969. Jean’s career with the Coast Guard spanned 50 years serving both at sea as a Navigation Officer and on land as Head of Navigation and Pilotage. Jean returned to the Coast Guard College in 1992 where he served as Superintendent of Search Rescue and Environmental Response. Although Jean officially retired in 2006, he continued to provide service to the Canadian Coast Guard College in a number of positions including instructor for Search and Rescue, Navigation Instructor, and Superintendent of Navigation. Jean’s made a lasting impression on the Coast Guard College where he loved instructing Officer Cadets and helping to develop future Officers of the Canadian Coast Guard.
Aside from his accomplished career, Jean had many interests. He was an avid golfer, he enjoyed horse racing and spending time with friends and family. Jean was also known to enjoy a good cigar.
Jean was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, Whitney Pier.
Jean is survived by his wife, Johanne Lebreux; son, Marc-Olivier (Catherine Langlois); sisters, Lise (Pierre) Paquin, Claire (Jacques) Clément, Sylvie (Alain) Olivier; brothers, René, Guy (Pierrette Gignac), Paul (Christine Blanchet); sister-in-law, Guylaine Lebreux; father-in-law, Guy Lebreux, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Rollande (Groulx) Lebreux, and sister-in-law, Carole Lebreux.
The family are grateful for the care provided by the VON, Cape Breton Homemakers, Palliative Care and especially Charlene MacDonald, the Care Coordinator for Continuing Care and those that provided care to Jean at home including Marlene, Tammy and Valerie.
Funeral service will be held Monday, May 27, 2019 in Sydney Memorial Chapel with Rev. Denis Lamey officiating. Interment will take place on Friday, June 28 at 11 a.m. at Cimetière Saint-Michel, Boulevard Des Forges, Trois-Rivieres, QC.
Donations may be made in Jean’s name to the Parkinson’s Society of Canada.
