Earl Douglas MCKENNA

Earl Douglas McKenna, 75, Bible Hill, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at home. Born in Truro, he was the beloved son of the late Purdy and Olive (MacMillan) McKenna. Earl worked as a senior councillor at Nova Scotia Youth Training Centre for 29 years. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Edith “Tineke” (Spence) McKenna; sisters, Ruth (Moore), Doreen (MacKay). He is survived by his son, Christopher (Rebecca), Beverly, England; daughter, Sara, Bible Hill; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alice McKenna, Beverly, England; brother, Ivan (Alice), Valley; brother-in-law, James Moore, Truro; cousin, Albert Johnson, Middleton; nephews, Robert “Robbie” MacKay, Milton, Ontario; Jeff MacKay, Murray Siding; Trevor MacKay (Amanda), Bible Hill; Terry Moore, Onslow; Dana McKenna, Dwayne McKenna, Valley; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alice McKenna, Beverly England. A devoted husband and father, Earl also had a heart for service to his community by representing local residents as a Bible Hill Village Commissioner, and then going on to represent them as a Councillor for Municipality of Colchester. Over the years he officiated many sports, including hockey and basketball, but was probably best known for umpiring baseball, for which he became Umpire in Chief for the province of Nova Scotia, and also founded Canadian Umpires Association. Earl could also be found on Sunday mornings in the choir at St. David’s United Church for many years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, and on June 8, 2019, obtained the title of District Deputy Grand Master, Colchester County District, GLNS, Right Worshipful Brother Earl D. McKenna. Special thanks to Dr. Ryve Loshaj for her steady care over the years. Honouring Earl’s wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. If so desired, donations can be made to Bible Hill/Truro Minor Baseball Association c/o Umpire Development, 26 Lloyd Court, Bible Hill, NS, B2N 2V6.
