Joseph ALLEN

The family of Joseph Allen is saddened to announce his passing on July 18, 2019 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Little Bras d’Or, Cape Breton on September 19, 1924, Joe moved to Springhill at a young age. There he worked as a coal miner and later ran a service station, canteen, and post office in Springhill Junction, along with his wife, Della. The family moved to Amherst in 1966, where he worked for Christie’s Trunk and Baggage Company and Brookfield/Scotsburn Dairy. His Catholic faith was very important to him. He was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Church in Springhill, where he was an altar server for many years and a member of the choir. In Amherst, he joined Nativity of Our Lady parish and was a member of Holy Family Church at the time of his passing. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe loved being out in nature and was an avid hunter and fisherman until well into his 80s. He always enjoyed being out at the camp with his brother-in-law Hilton Boss and the boys. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Legere) Allen; wife Della (Boss) Allen; brother Frank Allen (Stella); and sisters Elizabeth Alain, Dora (William) Casey, Hattie (David) Cameron, and Janie (Neri) Bastarache. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn
d’Entremont, and son-in-law, Rick, Amherst, NS; granddaughter Lauren and her husband Gerardo Raymundo, Dartmouth, NS; grandson Brett, St. John’s, NL; sister-in-law Helen (Boss) Weaver, London, ON; nieces and nephews; and friend Yvonne Stewart. They’ll remember him for his sense of humour, loving but stubborn nature, and delicious lemon meringue pies. A special thank you to the staff at White Birches Retirement Residence, as well as the staff in emergency, on the medical floor, and in palliative care at CRHCC. The family is also grateful to Dr. Zaremba and Rhonda for their care and attention over the years. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 26 at 11 am at Holy Family Church, 63 Church St, Amherst. Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St. Amherst, 902-667-9906. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Condolences and sharing of memories may be shared with the family via:www.campbellsamherst.ca or by visiting Campbell’s Facebook page.
