Dr Ahmad  Samad

Samad, Dr. Ahmad, Truro, Nova Scotia passed away Friday, July 1st, 2011 in St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, where he had been hospitalized since April 21st, 2011. He died, as he led his life, with dignity. Cancer and acute renal failure led to his demise, and he faced both illnesses with tremendous courage. He was a gentleman, beloved of all who knew him for his intelligence, vision, compassion and humour. Ahmad was born August 23rd, 1924 in Peshawar, Pakistan, eldest son of Dr. Abdul and Bilquis (Begum) Samad. He graduated from King Edward Medical College, Pakistan, pursued further training at Moorfields Eye hospital, London, UK, and then practiced Ophthalmology and ENT in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Libya before immigrating to Canada in 1968, fulfilling his great wish to make a better life for his family. He practiced in Digby, Nova Scotia from 1968-74, subsequently moving to Truro and opening an office in Colchester Medical Clinic. He was the first Ophthalmic Surgeon east of Montreal to perform Intraocular Lens Implant Surgery for cataract patients, which is now common practice. Ahmad worked till age 81. After his retirement, he divided his time between Truro and Vancouver. He is survived by wife Jeannie (Scott) of Truro, sons, Kamran Samad, Dr. Imran Samad (Joanne), Dr. Osman Samad (Seemi) all of Vancouver, Dr. Arif Samad, Halifax, daughter, Rubina Khair of Islamabad, Pakistan, grandchildren, Idris, Ilyas, Isa, Aliya, Owais all of Vancouver. He is also survived by stepdaughter, Mona of Londonderry, father-in-law, Shepard Scott of Sutherland's Lake and brother-in-law, Kevin Scott (Sylvia) of Debert. Beloved of his sisters, Surraya Hameedullah, Jamila Khair, brothers, Gen. Afzal Samad (Qudsia), Capt. Masood (Azra) all of Pakistan. Cherished by many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife and mother of his children, Wasima Begum. A Muslim ceremony was held on July 3rd in Vancouver, and burial will take place 1 PM Saturday, July 9th at the Muslim Cemetery, 533 Pictou Road, Bible Hill. Following the burial, friends and former patients are invited to join the family at a reception at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro.
