FISHER (Marsh), Ellen Jean – Truro, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday morning, July 23, 2011, at home. Born March 25, 1936, in Lower Five Islands, she was the second daughter of the late Bert and Mina (Berry) Marsh. She was educated in schools in Five Islands, Economy and Brookfield. She attended Nova Scotia Normal College, graduating from the two-year Home Economics program. Jean began teaching in Oxford where she met her husband, Neil, a fellow teacher. She also taught in Oromocto, New Brunswick and in the continuing education program associated with the Truro School district. She thoroughly enjoyed the many years helping others to sew. Jean and Neil settled in Truro in 1963 when he joined the faculty of Nova Scotia Teachers College. Over the years, Jean was involved in many groups and organizations, including Truro Head Start, Cobequid Arts Council, Truro Art Society and The Attic Painters. She was not only a gifted water colourist but also a wonderful organizer and group member. Jean and Neil were actively involved with their community and neighbourhood and they attended Brunswick Street United Church. Jean is survived by her husband of 53 years, Neil Fisher; children, Bruce (Natalie Bakody), Dartmouth; Sheri, Seattle; granddaughter, Sophie Elizabeth, to whom she was “Nani”; sisters, Vera Faulkner, Amherst; Sandra (Ken) Faulkner, Hart Lake; brother-in-law, Fred Fisher, and his wife, Meryl, a very special friend; numerous nieces, nephews and their children and Natalie’s daughter, Emily. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Ron Faulkner. Jean and Neil had a wonderful life together – blessed in their marriage, children and friendships. They were fortunate to have traveled together and they enjoyed their home on Archibald Street and many close friends. The family would like to thank all the caring and professional health care workers who helped Jean during her four-year battle with cancer. Both those at the Dickson Centre and those involved with Palliative Care have been remarkable. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jean’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Brunswick Street United Church, 250 Brunswick Street, Truro, Reverend David Lutes officiating.
