It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Jerome Delaney at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL on July 25th, 2011. Surrounded by his loving family, Jerome passed peacefully at the age of 85. He was born in Gull Island, Newfoundland, son of James and Ellen Delaney and has lived in Stephenville since 1951. Jerome leaves behind his beloved wife Marie, sons, Brian (Jean) Delaney, Robert (Marina) Delaney, Wayne (Sandi) Delaney, daughters, Maureen Cormier Jackson (Barry Jackson), Joan Delaney, brother Leo (Mary) Delaney, sister-in-law, Angela Delaney, eight grandchildren, caretaker, Alice Marche and a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Ellen Delaney, brothers, James Delaney and Tom Mike Delaney and his granddaughter Jenna Delaney. Jerome was a pioneer in the Town of Stephenville, a prominent business leader and a pillar of the community. He worked with the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville in 1951 and started a part time business bringing oil and building supplies from Corner Brook in 1952. He went into business full time in 1953 and built JM Delaney Lumber Company on St. Clare Ave. in 1956. The business has grown substantially and is still thriving after 55 years in the Stephenville community. In addition to his substantial business presence, Jerome participated actively in many community activities. He was past president of the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Stephenville Lions Club, member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Council Knights of Columbus Stephenville, member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, served on the Stadium Commission in the early days of Stephenville Gardens and an active member of St. Stephen’s Parish and many of the building committees. Jerome was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was admired for his accomplishments and success in life. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the Stephenville Community. Visitation took place at Russell’s Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville on Wednesday, July 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service took place at St. Stephen’s Parish, West Street, Stephenville on Thursday, July 28th at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow at the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery, Hansen Highway, Stephenville. In honour of Jerome, donations can be made to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Foundation.
