With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of George F. MacQuarrie, age 56, of Davenport Road, Sydney, and a former resident of Hinchey Avenue, New Waterford, on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, in Fort McMurray, Alta., as the result of an industrial accident.
Born in New Waterford, George was the son of his caring mother, Mary Georgina ‘Dodie’ (McGillivray) MacQuarrie and the late John MacQuarrie.
Wherever he was, George always considered himself a New Waterford boy and would always state that, ‘New Waterford was the center of the universe.’
He was a sports fanatic, an intellectual, highly opinionated and a proud father to his children.
George started his working career as a coal miner in Cape Breton. After Devco closed, he travelled out to Grande Cashe, Alta. and Campbell River, B.C. to work in the mines. George returned to Sydney and went back to school and received his third class stationery engineer degree and was employed by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality for five years. He later got his pipe fitter ticket and was employed in Fort McMurray, Alta., for several years.
George was a devoted husband to Fonda (MacDonald) MacQuarrie and loving father to daughters, Andrea (26), Jennifer (23) and Caitlin (22), all living at home.
Well loved by his vast family and friends, George is survived by sisters, Jackie (Colonel MacLellan) and their children, Jamie, Rochelle, Ronnie, second sister, Linda (Tim Keddy) and their children, Ian and Joshua, youngest sister, Michelle (Pat Busnello), their children, Matthew and Lucas; as well as his brother, Danny (Rachael MacLellan) and their children, Tanya and Terra-Lyn.
George is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Pius and Rhoda MacDonald, who held him in high regard. He also leaves behind a great family of aunts and uncles on his mother’s side, Theresa ‘Tecie,’ Alice ‘Otie,’ Ray and Donald ‘Donnie.’ On his fathers side he leaves behind, Mary, Margaret, Anna, Kay, Sadie, Wilina and Tom. In addition a large extended family also mourn his passing.
Besides his father, George was predeceased by aunts and uncles, Alex, Eddie, May, Bernice, Donald, Greg and Edward.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley, is Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Church followed by a reception in the parish hall on Convent Street. Cremation to follow.
