Born In: Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: December 9th, 1951
Passed in: Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: August 9th, 2011
Rev. Glenn Sidney MacDonald, BA, BTh, MDiv, MTS, 59 of Pictou, formerly Thorburn, N.S. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, N.S. on Aug. 9, 2011.
Born in Whycocomagh on Dec. 9, 1951 to the late Peter and Edna (Macdonald) MacDonald. He attended school in Whycocomagh, Saint Francis Xavier University, McGill University, The Presbyterian College, Montreal and lately the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax.
Glenn was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament of the Presbyterian Church in Canada in his home church of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh on May 17, 1977. He faithfully served the charges of Sherbrooke, Glenelg, Moser River (1977-1981), North River, North Shore, Englishtown (1981-1990) and Thorburn, Sutherland’s River (1990-2005) at which time he reluctantly retired from active ministry due to his health. He was a diligent and proud servant of the church, acting on committees of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the Synod of the Atlantic Provinces and Presbyteries of Cape Breton and Pictou, both of which he was moderator. He served as a chaplain in the militia to the 1st and 2nd Nova Scotia Highlanders. Glenn was a member of the masonic lodge and a life member of the Atlantic Mission Society.
He was a passionate student and teacher of the Gaelic language, and an enthusiastic storyteller who often quoted his father: “Truth has little bearing on a good story”. His greatest strengths in his ministry were his sense of humour, his enthusiasm in working with youth and the pleasure he took in sharing a pastoral visit or a casual conversation. Glenn always believed that religion was foremost about community; he saw himself as a part of the communities he served, not apart from them.
He is survived by his wife, cornerstone and foundation of 36 years, Christina (Cameron); sons Rev. Peter (Carol), Big Bras d’Or; Robert, Halifax; Stephen, CFB Gagetown; granddaughter Phoebe; cherished aunt, Glennie MacMillan, Sydney; beloved mother-in-law, Roberta Cameron, Strathlorne, N.S. and a large and loving extended family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his infant sister, Patricia.
Visitation will be held at the Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow Friday, Aug. 12 from 7-9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. His remains will then be transferred to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh for visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday from where the funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 15 at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh, with Rev Andrew MacDonald presiding followed by committal at Stewartdale Cemetery, Whycocomagh.
