Elda Lowther

Elda May Lowther, age 92, of Leicester passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Monday, August 15, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in East Leicester, she was a daughter of the late Clarence E. and Mabel E. (Carter) Hunsley.
Elda was a devoted Christian, very active in her church. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, a leader with the 4H, a member of the Quilters Guild and the Credit Union. She was the correspondent for the Oxford Journal, the Amherst Daily News and the Citizen for 40 years, up until her death. A very active volunteer she canvassed for many organizations and received volunteer of the year for Oxford in 1998. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Nomads of Arvudaka, the Rebekah Lodge, the Travelers, the Oxford Pioneers Club and the Cumberland County Seniors Council. She loved to quilt, win at Scrabble, play cards, tend her flowers, and cook. Above all else came her family who adored her and miss her greatly.
She will be sadly missed by her son Borden (Marjorie "Betty"), Warren; daughters Mabel (Harold) Lowther, Oxford, Diane (Richard) Wood, Riverview, NB, Vivian (John) Warwick, Leicester, Mary Ellen (Ross) Lusby, Amherst, Helen (Rick) Estabrooks, Brookdale; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Elvie Lowther, Leicester; several nieces and nephews and her special cat Meg.
She was predeceased by her husband Norman, 1 grandchild and 1 great grandchild; brothers Russell, Carl and Everett and sisters Alice Spidel and Annie Bird.
Arrangements have been entrusted to W Allen Funeral Home, 60 Water St, Oxford, NS (902-447-2167) where visiting hours will take place on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 2 pm from the Little River Baptist Church, Rev. Morley Bentley and Pastor Chris Greer officiating. Burial will follow in the Leicester Cemetery.
Those wishing to make a donation in Elda's memory may do so to the Leicester Cemetery, with whom Elda acted as Secretary-Treasurer for 52 years, or the Little River Baptist Church.
