The death of Mary 'Eleanor' (Wallis) Hankinson occurred Aug. 26, 2011. She was the youngest daughter of the late James John 'JJ' and Hattie Louisa Wallis of Digby, and was born in Yarmouth in 1915. Eleanor graduated from Digby High School, and was also a student at Sacred Heart Academy in Meteghan. In Allston, Mass., she studied pipe organ, and choral music. Mom was an accomplished pianist, having received a diploma for music class teaching through the Canadian Bureau for the Advancement of Music in Toronto. Eleanor had many hobbies and interests apart from music, which included art, pottery, handcrafts, rug hooking, etc. Always interested in people, particularly young people, she lead the Anti-Can’t Class, CGIT groups, senior and junior choirs in the Grace United Church in Digby, and was president of the Young People’s Association. She was editor of their page in the United Church Observer. Mom was a member of the National Girls Work Board for several years, and conducted correspondence courses through the MREC, as well as conducting CGIT camps. For many years. she was involved in Digby music festivals. Following her marriage, she continued youth work in Weymouth, and conducted Ecumenical Church Vacation School, with an attendance of over 200 from the area. She was a charter member of the Weymouth Garden Club and Weymouth Historical Society. Mom was also a member of the Roaring Twenties Antique Car Club, and the Antique Car Club of America. A member of the Anglican Church, she was organist for over 30 years and superintendant and teacher in the church school, as well as holding offices in the Anglican Church Women. In later years, she helped with the music and Sunday school in Riverside and Bethel United Baptist churches. She leaves behind to mourn, her husband of almost 71 years, Kenneth; daughter, Patricia Teed (husband Clyde), Ottawa, Ont.; sons, Owen (wife Sharron), and Ed (wife Diane), both from Weymouth; grandchildren, Scott, Alanna, Adam, Stephen, Melissa, Matthew, Patrick, Erika, Jody, Lanny and Kyle. Eleanor leaves behind great-grandchildren, Emily, Andrew, Avery, Nora, Ethan, Olivia, Sophia, Kendrick, Jacob, and Connor. Besides her parents, Eleanor was preceded by brother, Mac; and sisters, Jessie Robinson and Florrie Tibert. Special thanks to the caregivers, Dr. Bander and Dr. Lee, and the nurses at Digby General Hospital.
