Armstrong, Evelyn Elizabeth (Tattrie) — 103, of Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, formerly of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Dykeland Lodge, where she was a resident for the last 16 years. Born on January 7, 1908, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, USA, she was a daughter of the late John Robert Tattrie and Elizabeth Ellen (Langille) Tattrie. Evelyn graduated from the Colchester Academy in 1927, and from the Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro, in 1929. She was a school teacher for over 32 years, having taught at Milford Station, Melanson, Hantsport, Falmouth, Windsor Academy, Windsor Regional and retired from Windsor Elementary. In her earlier years, she was an avid basketball player. Evelyn married Lawrence C. Armstrong at St. James United Church, Hantsport on October 27, 1937 and together they owned and operated the Windmill Canteen and Restaurant in Falmouth for over 30 years (late 1930’s to late 1960’s). Evelyn enjoyed bridge, travelling, music, dancing and being involved in community affairs. She served on the Session of Juniper Grove United Church, was a member of the chime choir and the resident council at Dykeland Lodge. At the time of her death, she was the second longest resident at Dykeland Lodge. She was an accomplished bridge player and poet, having composed numerous poems for family and friends over the years. Evelyn is survived by her only son, Lawrence “Larry” Albert Armstrong and daughter-in-law, Sharon Nora (O’Brien) Armstrong, Falmouth; grandchildren, Peter (Angie) Armstrong; Robert (Shelley) Armstrong; Sarah Armstrong (Tim Allen); great grandchildren, Matthew, Candace, Jacob, Megan, Jeremy, Dawson, Erin, Delaney, Theo, Nicholas, Kirsten, William, Sydney and Carter; nieces, Joan (Tom) Thompson, Hantsport; Anne (Doug) Richier, Abbotsford, BC; Lorraine Winsor (Russell Huntley), Falmouth; nephews, John “Jack” Stevens, Hantsport; Richard (Gwen) Armstrong, Falmouth; several great nieces and great nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Lawrence Churchill Armstrong (1972); parents, John Robert and Elizabeth Ellen (Langille) Tattrie; sister, Sylvia Joan Stevens and her husband, Alex; brother, Royal “Roy” Edgar Tattrie; brother-in-law, Harry Armstrong and his wife, Elsie; nephew, Frederick “Fred” Stevens. Visitations were 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2011, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Heather MacDougall officiated, followed by a reception at the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. Interment was in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Town Road, Falmouth.
