Violet Mae (Brewer) Kennedy
Born In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed in: New Victoria, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: September 13th, 2011
At first the angels stood behind her head guarding her every breath. Later when her breath began to fade, the angels hovered above her, gently lifting her heavenly spirit into the hands of God.
On the beautiful morning of Sept. 13, 2011, Violet Kennedy passed away in the loving comfort of her family home in New Victoria. At the time of her death, Violet was cradled in the love of her family.
Violet, better known as Mama Kennedy, defined the word grandmother. It was a role that came naturally to her. From babies to toddlers to teenagers and everything in between, she played an instrumental role in the lives of her 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She leaves the younger generation of our family with memories of music and laughter, sleepovers and late night giggles, kitchen ceilidhs and cherished conversations. She taught them well and loved them dearly.
Violet loved family gatherings, neighbours dropping by and long chats. Her house was a gathering place where all who entered felt at home instantly. She delighted in preparing Sunday suppers and relished in all the good company and food that they brought with them. She was blessed with a healthy sense of humour and loved to share a good laugh. Violet had a strong sense of community and over the course of her life she was an active member of the New Victoria CWL. Above all else, she was best known for her kind and gentle spirit, her strength and her warm heart. For this we are most grateful.
Violet was blessed to have an extraordinary group of ladies “the girls” keep her company and assist with her care throughout the years. In many ways, these ladies were an extension of her family. She was grateful for their support and held each of them in high regard.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., Violet was the daughter of the late James and Mae (Lockart) Brewer.
She is survived by daughters, Jane (Richard) Montague, Concord, Mass., Rita (Blair) Darroch, Howie Center, Mar-Lynn (Peter) MacNeil, River Ryan, Karen (Patrick) Tallack, Victoria Mines; sons, James (Ailish) Kennedy, Acton, Mass., Kevin Kennedy, River Ryan and son-in-law, Ken Bellows, Coxheath.
In death, Violet will be reunited with her husband, Russell Kennedy, daughters, Mae and Margie and her son, Russell Jr. (Bubby) Kennedy.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Sept. 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at St. Leonard’s Parish, Mount Carmel Avenue, on Friday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. A reception at the KOC on Plummer Avenue will follow. Burial will take place along the beautiful shoreline of St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria.
In lieu of donations, Violet simply wished that each of us live our lives in a kind and gentle manner and that we bestow an act of kindness onto another human being in honour of her memory.
You were loved. You will be missed. We were blessed.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
