It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister Theresa Hickey, a resident of Peppett Street, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Theresa was born on Nov. 22, 1930, in Harbour Mille, Nfld., the daughter of the late Igol and Beatrice (Barns) Barnes.
She moved to North Sydney and married the love of her life Tim Hickey.
Theresa was an active member of the North Sydney Fire Services Ladies Auxiliary since 1970, the Nova Scotia Wildlife Association, the ladies auxiliary of 562 Cabot Squadron and a member of the Northside Pensioners Club.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and the Catholic Women’s League.
Theresa will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, gentle woman who enjoyed her life surrounded by family and friends. She was always on the go and willing to help anyone who needed it.
She is survived by her three sons, Joseph, North Sydney, Igol (Mary), Oxford, Timothy (Gail), Frenchvale; and her three daughters, Sheila (Ein) Young, Ontario, Audrey (Bruce) Robinson, Florence, Theresa Hickey (Glenn), Halifax; her grandchildren, Sabrina, Paul, Tanya, Lara, Shawn, Tracy, Cheryl, Ashley, Samantha, Rylan, Kenny, Billy and T.J. and also her 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Harrison (Audrey) Barnes, Marystown, Melvin (Edith) Barnes, Harbour Mille; and sister-in-law, Judith Barnes, St. John’s.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Timothy, her brother, Ambrose, her sisters, Edna and Joyce and brother-in-law, James.
Visitation for Theresa will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
