SLOAN, MATTHEW - The passing of Matthew Stephen Sloan of Fredericton, NB, occurred on Friday, September 23, 2011. Born on April 27, 1985 in Fort McMurray, AB, he was the son of Stephen and Janet Sloan. Matt was a teacher and greatly enjoyed music, soccer, volleyball, camping, fishing, coaching and all forms of pop culture. In addition to his parents, Matt is survived by his brother, Eric Sloan; sister, Lauren (Aaron) Riley; grandparents, Robert and Barbara Sloan, Geraldine McHatten; aunts and uncles, Gary (Brenda) Dixon of Sussex, Steven (Elaine Jeong) of Edmonton, Alberta, Jeffrey (Sharon Burke) of Fredericton, Anthony (Eva) Sloan of Warsaw, Poland, and Jennifer (Chris) Penman of Oakville, Ontario; and cousins, Zachary and Samantha Dixon, Hannah and Ashley Dixon, Sarah and Joseph Penman, and Erin Burke. Matt will also be greatly missed by his large extended family and many close, wonderful friends.
Matt was predeceased by his grandfather, John Dixon and step-grandfather, Ron McHatten.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Monday, September 26, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. A celebration of Matt’s life will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 4pm. Matt was a proud graduate of the Kinesiology (Recreation) program at UNB and of the Education program at the University of Maine Presque Isle. He believed strongly in the power of recreation to enrich lives. From his early childhood, Matt played on many sports teams and, in recent years, coached a number of school and community teams. Guided by his studies and his convictions, he worked for several summers with the Fredericton District Soccer Association and as a counsellor at Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine. Accordingly, in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Right to Play Canada. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
