Leo Bennett

Born In: Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: September 26th, 2011

It is with heavy hearts that on Sept. 26, 2011, we lost a loving husband, father, Poppy, brother, uncle, and friend. Leo passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loved ones after a brief illness.
Born in Pictou, N.S., Leo was the son of the late William and Gertrude Bennett of Sydney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Julia; his children, who were his pride and joy, Jennifer (Eddie) Campbell and Michelle and his grandchildren, Kelsey and Keagan (Poppy’s little man). He is also survived by his brothers, Ray (Bev) Bennett, Wayne (Phyllis) Bennett and Robert ‘Kimo’ Poirier (Patty Heighton); sisters, Julianna Marcoux, Fran (Doug) Moulton, Freda (Bill) Cooke, Debbie (Frank) MacNeil and Rinda (Richard) Massé; mother-in-law, Nellie Tynski and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Gertrude ‘Sis’ (Frank) Adey; brother, Nelson; brothers-in-law, Omar Marcoux and Gordie MacDonald and father-in-law, John Tynski.
In his earlier years, Leo was employed with J.D. Smythe Ltd. as a well respected plumber. He took great pride in his work, with many customers requesting him specifically. Eventually, he incorporated LGB Plumbing and Heating Limited as a self employed plumber until joining the Province of N.S., Sheriff’s Division as a deputy sheriff. In this capacity, he took every opportunity to deliver various training courses related to his employment, including courses on domestic violence, train the trainor and tazer international. He was shop steward for NSGEU, Local 1, as well as a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 682.
His love of the water and boating saw him involved as commodore of the Dobson Yacht Club for seven years. He was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. His quick wit, infectious laugh, and beaming smile, will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Holy Redeemer Church. Following the service, a celebration of life will be held at the Dobson Yacht Club, Westmount. To his boating buddies “Farewell”, “Smooth Sailing”, “Keep the Dobson ‘Steady as She Goes’”.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
