Robert "Bob" Edgett
It is with deep sadness that we regret to announce the death of Robert "Bob" Edgett. Bob, 81, of Dorchester, passed away peacefully at the Sackville Memorial Hospital comforted by his family's presence on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.
Born in Midgic Station, NB, he was a son of the late Harry and Bessie (Sears) Edgett.
Bob was an amateur boxer, starting in 1945 at the age of 15 until he turned 33 in 1978. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1949 until 1951. He won the Maritime Boxing Championship in 1949 and 1950 in the light heavy weight category and in 1954 and 1956 in the heavy weight category. He won the Quebec Golden Gloves in 1949 and won the Maine State Championship in 1962. He coached boxing for 58 years to boys, girls, men, and women from 1953 at Bob Edgett's Boxing Club. His club produced 15 Canadian Champions including Winter Games and Golden Gloves. He was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame and the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, the Sackville Sports Wall of Fame in 1989, and the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame.
In addition to his wife Hazel of Dorchester, he will be sadly missed by his sons Danny (Sandy), Moncton, Jay (Debbie), Dorchester, Larry, Memramcook; daughter Lindy Edgett, Nanaimo, BC; 5 grandchildren, Shannon, Benjamin, Martina, Adam and Danielle; 7 great grandchildren.
Arrangements are in care of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (506-364-1300) where visiting hours took place on Thursday, Sept. 22, and Friday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at 2 p.m. Burial took place in the Sackville Cemetery.
