It is with great sadness and fond memories that we announce the passing of Melvin Leonard Johnson, age 93, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Mel was born on February 25, 1918 to Martin & Laura Johnson in Battrum, SK. He was a gentle and loving husband to Lizzie Dickie and together they raised their two daughters, Corliss and Janice. Mel joined the air force and served from 1941 to 1945. He then returned to Pennant to continue working as a grain buyer for a total of 13 years. An opportunity with Mobile Oil took Mel through the last 28 years of his working days. Mel was actively involved in sports. He enjoyed baseball, curling, golfing and dancing. Camping and wintering in Arizona with family and friends were an important element in his retirement. Community involvement played a large role in Mel’s life. He was a member of the Masonic Royal Arch and Eastern Star. Mel became a Lifetime Legion Member with over 60 years of service to the organization. Mel is survived by his two daughters, Corliss (Tom) Horne and Janice (Brian) McCook, grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Liz, six sisters and by one brother. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 11:00 am from the First United Church, Swift Current, SK with Rev. Sharon Ferguson Hood officiating. The pianist for the service was Joan Williamson with “Amazing Grace” sung by the congregation. The usher in the church was Clay Farnsworth. The Honour Guard was performed by the Royal Canadian Legion. Honorary pallbearers were “All of Mel’s Friends”. The Interment was held at t he Pennant Cemetery, Pennant, SK. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
